Paving an asphalt driveway involves 2 main steps:
Preparation Phase
During the preparation phase the driveway is excavated and the sub base is graded. Next, gravel is added according to the soil conditions. Some driveways will require more base than others but at a minimum 6 inches of class A gravel is recommended. Typically the preparation is the most important step as an asphalt driveway is only as good as the base it is placed on. This step also takes about 75 percent of the time.
Paving Phase
Once the driveway is graded for drainage and compacted it is ready for paving. Our crew will place the asphalt carefully and evenly using a combination of hand techniques and use of our paver machine. The edges of each driveway are compacted as we go to ensure a neat appearance. The asphalt is compacted using a small plate tamper as we work ensuring the proper compaction density, finally the driveway is compacted using our 3 ton asphalt roller.
